There is a very old adage that says if you do not learn from history you will repeat the mistake of the past. This is true for nations but it is especially true spiritually speaking. I Corinthians 10:6 "Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did" The apostle Paul was basically saying that all the Bible was written so that we can learn from the good examples of the godly men and women of the past and that we would open our eyes to realize that if someone repeats the same things that brought judgment upon people that we would turn from those ways. Psalm 78 is encouraging the same thing in that the people were to retell the stories of the miracles and signs of God so the next generation would trust the Lord. Over and over in scriptures we are encouraged to see the God of the heavens and earth but over and over the people turned their eyes from the one true God to idols. This is also a repeated thought in the Bible; Psalm 78:36-37 "But then they would flatter Him with their mouths, lying to Him with their tongues; their hearts were not loyal to Him, they were not faithful to His covenant." This was the pattern in the book of Judges and among the kings of Judah and unfortunately has been the pattern of the history of the church for 2,000 years. I pray that this year will be different for many people that they will begin to learn from the vast examples of scriptures that teach us to put God as our first love. Revelation 2:4 states the problem Jesus had with the church of Ephesus which was they have forsaken their first love. Jesus clearly stated the first and most important commandment was to love the Lord God with all our heart, soul, strength and mind. The second most important commandment was to love one another. The apostle John stated in the concept of love that it can not be in words alone but must connected with actions, I John 3:18. Jesus said if you love me you will obey my commands.
May God open the eyes of your heart this coming year and learn from history and submit completely to Jesus as Lord and Savior.
