In my last blog I talked about forgiveness and this is a follow up in that once forgiveness is secured there is always a what's next. There are a lot of people who have convinced themselves that they have forgiven someone but their actions seem to speak another story. Let's just say for that forgiveness has taken place so let's discuss a couple of what's next by asking some questions. First, can I pray for the person that I have just forgiven. Jesus said "But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." Matthew 5:44 I am not saying that the person is or is not your enemy but if I am called to pray for my enemy then it is clear that Jesus has an expectation that we can genuinely pray for those we have just forgiven. Second, do I have peace when I am around that person. This does not means there will not be any heighten level of anxiety but you must be able to act normal or there is a sign that you have forgiven but have not process everything that this forgiveness means. I do not teach that you will once again become best friends but normality is achievable through the grace and mercy of God. Third, when that person is mention is there any negative emotions that arise? If there is it a sign that though you may have spoken a word of forgiveness it is clear that complete forgiveness is not complete. Because forgiveness is a decision and a process I must learn as well to release that person and all the circumstances into the hands of God. The more I try to control the more I will actually lose control. Trusting God is allowing God to work out the details and giving Him full access to do whatever His wisdom seems best for me.
So in the process of moving forward I must learn to forgive and then to begin to act upon that forgiveness so as not to allow the enemy a foothold of any kind.
May the God of all love and mercy strengthen you in the inner being to live a life pleasing unto the Lord Jesus Christ.
